Essentials Needed For Your First Apartment And College Dorm Decorating

Budgets can be tight and space may be limited, What essentials will you be bringing to your new apartment or dorm room?

Small neutral spaces of first apartments and college dorms will soon be welcoming their newest occupants with their car loads of belongings to start their new independent life.

Make a list of the items you need. Ask family, friends and neighbors if they would have any unwanted items. You would be surprised how many people have attics and basements full of home decor they have stored and not touched in years. You may be doing them a favor too. Head out for a weekend of yard sales to look for cheaper items that would furnish or accessorize your space.(a little paint and elbow grease can have old pieces looking like new)

Find out if the room or apartrment is already furnished. Are there furniture pieces that already exist in the room? If so, personalize them and make it your own. An exciting and budget friendly way to do this is with slipcovers. If unfurnished and limited space, consider a futon or loveseat in your living space. Keeping it cozy plus extra seating for guests is important.

Here's a list of essentials to get organized and prepared for the big move:
  • Bedding and towels, easiest way to bring color to your room.
  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • An area rug is a great way to add color, pattern and warmth to your space.
  • Cube Shelving with storage baskets are a helpful and versatile piece to have. Great way to store belongings and keep organized and clutter free.
  • A fan for warm days when the air conditioning just isn't enough.
  • A desk and comfy desk chair.
  • A message board to hang by the door so you can keep track of all the classes, important dates and places to be.
